Scouts Canada was recently fined $36,000 for failing to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act relating to facilities at its Camp Peacehaven. Volunteers put in many hours to comply with the law and Scouts Canada spent over $90,000 trying to upgrade its water system. At all times, the scouts were warned not to drink the water and bottled water was provided. However, the Safe Drinking Water Act does not consider this an acceptable excuse — the camp had to have a fully compliant drinking water system, or close. It closed.
