About
Tyler is an associate lawyer in the class actions department. Tyler’s practice is focused on class action litigation, including securities, competition, and toxic tort litigation.
Tyler has appeared at all levels of Ontario’s Courts and the Supreme Court of Canada. Among other matters, Tyler was part of the team prosecuting the securities class action against Manulife Financial Corporation and others that resulted in a $69 million settlement on the eve of trial. The Manulife settlement is among the largest securities class action settlements in Canadian history. Tyler was also part of the team that represented the plaintiff in the Canadian Solar securities litigation, which resulted in a US$13 million settlement, and the team that represented numerous claimants in their litigations arising out of injuries at a Canadian-owned mine in Eritrea.
Between 2019 and 2021, Tyler was seconded to Claims Funding Europe, a litigation funding firm in Dublin, Ireland. At Claims Funding Europe, Tyler helped manage complex securities and competition claims in Europe and Asia, including litigations arising out of high-profile accounting scandals at Toshiba and Volkswagen. Tyler also assisted in competition actions in the Netherlands involving cartelized vehicles, and airfreight.
Tyler also represents individuals who allege they were harmed in group homes, and is part of the team litigating a proposed class action against for-profit group home chain Hatts Off. He is actively involved in a variety of community initiatives and pro bono matters. Among other commitments, Tyler has acted as a volunteer lawyer with Pro Bono Ontario’s Education Law Project, which provides legal representation to students and families seeking access to educational services, and the Osgoode Hall Investor Protection Clinic, which provides free legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled and cannot afford a lawyer. He has served as a volunteer judge at the Winkler Class Actions Moot.
Tyler obtained his J.D. from the Queen’s University Faculty of Law and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2016. He is an elected Member-at-Large of the Ontario Bar Association’s Class Actions Section, and a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Advocates’ Society.
